Hangar Flying / Re: What system to use?
« on: January 13, 2009, 10:44:02 AM »
EJ and I have found doing smaller parts than a wing (engine cowls) that West and high ambient temps are not good. EZ Poxy works the best as it has a lower viscosity, wets out better, has a longer pot life and makes a lighter part. West is great for smaller quickie parts. We have even given EZ Poxy a shot in the microwave to lower the viscosity in colder temps--don't try that with West. I know of what I speak.

Hangar Flying / Landing/Taxi lights
« on: November 14, 2007, 06:02:43 PM »
I intalled two 55 watt MR16's in the lower portion of each winglet. One has a 12 degree width (landing light) and the other is the taxi light with a 40 degree range. The pocket I made for the bulbs is fiberfax lined and vented inboard and bottom. The lighting circuits will have an indictor light on the panel to show when they are on thus preventing operation when not needed.

Hangar Flying / wing painting
« on: August 08, 2007, 02:02:32 PM »
What I did was mount a 4x4 on a piece of plywood (all scrap stuff). The 4x4 was braced vertically on the plywood with 3/4 inch metal conduit anchored top and bottom-three directions. I then got a heavy duty Simpson right angled post anchor and attached a 2x6 that was bolted to the wing in two places (inside and one outside). The winglet end was supported with a similar post that had a bolt with rubber end that was placed in the position light hole. Re-enforce the inside of this opening with some flox.
Now with a large bolt in the Simpson anchor I was able to rotate the wing and paint the entire top, bottom and winglet in one session.
It's kinda wordy, but I hope this helps.

Hangar Flying / canopy available
« on: June 19, 2007, 01:25:42 PM »
just received a beautiful tinted LEZ canopy from Todd's canopies. It is a great piece of work. The only problem is it has a 2 inch crack on the right front part of the nose (likely took a bump in shipping). The crack has been stop drilled so it is stabilized. Todd is making a replacement this week--no questions asked.
Now what to do with this one.
Anyone out there want a new bargain long ez canopy still wrapped in plastic. I figure the blimish (not very pronounced) will be covered about one third after intallation. (It really is a great looking unit.)
Or, a portion of the canopy could be used for a different type of a/c.
I paid $480 (shipping included) for an undamaged one so Todd is backing that up.
Anyway, it is available for pick-up in the Los Angeles area (no shipping).
Or it can be picked up at Elwood Johnson's hanger (KWHP) Whiteman Airport (I know he won't mind)
Price is $150 which is what Todd is out for shipping the replacement canopy to me from Florida.
I don't want a dime out of it. The ck would be made to Todd and will cover some of his loss.
If anyone is interested let me know. Or if you want info from Todd his no. is 954-579-0874. We spoke this am and I indicated I would post this.

Check with Terry Schubert, he's in the member directory and has recently created a mold for his O-320 cowls.

Terry (I think it was him) and others have indicated recently that they plan on producing cowls, but are not ready to do so yet.

Hangar Flying / LEZ Low Drag O-320 Cowls
« on: March 03, 2005, 03:35:14 PM »
Anyone have a current source for LEZ low drag O-320 engine cowls?
Feather Lite makes a glass plans built draggy one and a pricey carbon fiber low drag type.
From a recent past survey, there doesn't appear to be a reliable source for this part.
Anything new on the subject?
