Hey Rudy!  Haven't seen you out in a while.  You been flying?  Flew my LongEZ a couple of times this week.  Finding the summer heat gets the engine hotter than I'd like on one cylinder, something to work on. :)

I found a new formula to use that seems to be a lot more accurate.  I found it in Kitplanes, Dec 06, article called 'Power Principle'

The formula is this:

HP = SLHP * (MAP / RATEDMAP) * (RPM / RATEDRPM)

So for my engine which is 118 HP @29", 2800 RPM the formula is:

HP = 118 * (MAP / 29) * (RPM / 2800)

I plug in MAP and RPM and get HP.  This works only for Rich of Peak.  

The other formula for Lean of Peak operations, HP = FuelFlow * 14.9 is also discussed in this article.  Evidently that formula is good for engines with 8.5:1 compression, and it varies with compression.  For a 7.5:1 engine, it would be HP = FuelFlow * 13.7

The article discusses the principles behind these formulas.  Of course they are approximations, but are pretty close.

Which part of the nose gear?  The pivot block in the fuse?  The wheel/castering assembly?  The lift mechanism?  Or all of the above?

The engine monitor runs on my PDA.  I wrote the software myself.  It uses an RS232 data feed from the Grand Rapids EIS 4000 which I have mounted in the back seat, and all the probes run to the EIS.  My software does graphic display, some analysis functions (like leaning, % power, etc...) and data logging to SD cards.  I can display the logged data in Excel or other spreadsheet/charting app.

I am looking for a hertzler prop for my O-235.  I tried to place an order with him, but he isn't taking orders.  Anyone have one they will part with?

based engine monitor software I've written and am currently flying
with.  Bill Ingram has been running the show down here, but he asked
me to send out some notices about the meeting this month since he will
be out of town.  Hope to see you there.  With the long days of summer
and nice cool evenings, MYF would be nice evening flying destination
in your EZ!

Ralph,

There are two groups of EZ pilots that often get together on Weekends.  One group in Ramona, that hang out around the 'Chuck Hall' hangars until they go get lunch on Saturdays, and the guys at KSEE that meet at Sids hangars at Gillespie.

The electronic ussually replaces the non impulse coupled mag.  If you don't have an impulse coupled mag it probably doesn't matter.  Most people seem to fire them 'tops and bottoms' with the EI firing the bottoms and the mag firing the tops.  The EI puts out more voltage and seems to be better at keeping the plugs clean, and the bottom plugs tend to be the ones that need better cleaning.

I don't know anything about running auto plugs on a Mag, but it certainly seems that  the Mag puts out a lot less energy than an electronic ignition does.  I purchased one of those 'wrap around the plug wire' tachs, and tried to use it on my mag.  It wouldn't pick up a signal at all.  I even tried wrapping it a lot more times than recommended, but just couldn't get it to pick up any pulses.

I would think that the larger surface area of the aviation plug might be needed for fouling protection?  I know that even with the aircraft plugs, the mags put out so little energy that they foul up really easily if you don't lean on taxi.

You can purchase an antenna kit that includes the foil, the torroids and an instruction booklet from www.rst-engr.com  They sell it as an 'antenna kit'.

Their web site says that they are out of the office for a while, but I have ordered from them before and they provide great service.

The Original Long EZ plans consist of:

Section I: 26 chapters of building instructions.  Entire airframe, wings, canard, etc...  There are 14 pages of 18"x24" templates (Appendix drawings as referred to in the plans).  

Section IIA - O200 Installation manual (optional)

Section IIC - O-235 Installation manual (optional)

Section VI - Landing brake construction plans.

Additionally there are the Roncz Canard plans, the LongEZ Owners Manual, Large Rudder Plans, and Flush belhorn plans.

The Large rudders and speed brake should be considered mandatory.  Flush belhorns look good, but they are harder to build.  The LongEZ owners manual can be downloaded from ez.org.  The Roncz canard has advantages in the rain but also suffers from a 'dead zone' in flight in some installations (I don't know if this happens on all planes or not).  I understand that the original GU canard has some good points as well and the rain issue can be minimized/fixed with vortex generators.

You will need the Canard Pushers from issue 26 and beyond.  There are compilations of changes available that list all of the plans changes and updates in one place.

For difficult components, I would think that the Engine mount and Nose gear casting/mounting hardware would be hard to get.  Also the manual nose gear system would be difficult to find.   Most all of the other metal parts are manageable by the builder, but you will need some metal cutting tools and you'd probably have to make them all up at one time so you can have them plated for proper corrosion prevention.  The other option is to eliminate as many of them as possible.  If you use an electric nose lift and speedbrake actuator you eliminate quite a few parts that would be difficult to source and/or build.  There are electric options for trim that eliminate even more of the metal parts required in the plans.  Some of the parts are shared with the Cozy and can be purchased at: http://www.cozygirrrl.com/

I know that featherlite has been a source of parts like gear bows and cowlings in the past, they don't seem to have much of a web presence so you'd have to dig up their contact info.

Hangar Flying / SDEZ Squadron March '05 Meeting

I've been working on the blueprints for my shop.  Hope to get them finished up this Sat.  Need to get that building built so we have more room to work!

I was reading a post on another site that said that the wilhelmson nose lift in its latest version has a switch that makes the manual crank easier to turn.  I assume it disconnects the motor electrically from the control circuitry.  I don't recall a switch of this type on our lift?  Had you heard about that Brian?
