Tom Staggs and his wife wrote up the construction details of their cover.  It's small, light, and inexpensive but it's only for the canopy (not the entire aircraft).  If that's what you want I'll ask Tom if I can forward you the instructions he sent me.  I'm pretty sure he'll say "sure".

Hangar Flying / Kanab Fly-in Announcement

This is a reminder that the Kanab Fly-in/Timed Event is just around the corner.  Char Spencer (760-375-2958) does all the work organizing this; I'm just trumpeting it because I want to see the event prosper and grow.  

Last year's recap:

Here's the sequence of events:
  --- Saturday, September 1: arrival day, pizza by the pool
  --- Sunday, September 2: breakfast at the airport, "timed event", probable fly-out for lunch, possible hike in the red rocks above town, lounging around the pool, Tex-Mex "banquet" at Nedra's
  --- Monday, September 3: departure day

The place to stay is Aiken's Lodge (800-790-0380).  1 or 2-bed rooms for $51; 3 beds for $71 if reserved by August 10.

A word about the "timed event": it's not a race but rather a timed course in which your time from takeoff to the finish line gives you an average speed and bragging rights to it.  Takeoffs are single-ship (no formation nowadays) and you can fly it however fast or slow or high or low you want.  Total time is about half an hour.  Half the guys fly the timed course and half abstain.  For me, it's something exciting to look forward to on Saturday morning.

Hangar Flying / Arlington Fly-in Fly-out Dinner

Thank you GlennBob and Bill.  T'was cool seeing canard aircraft returning to the traffic pattern in elements of two or three, strobe lights blinking in the failing light.  

That area (the San Juan islands) is just gorgeous in the summertime and is littered with lots of 3000-4000' paved strips (at sea level) begging for further exploration.  After Arlington we flew to Sequim for a couple of days -- 20 minutes by EZ or a few hours by car and ferry.  Next year I'll consider flying out earlier in the day, meeting the group for dinner, and returning to the fly-in before dark.

Here's another Arlington picture: this rare VariViggen belongs to Charles Spinelli who presented a forum on his homebrew data recorder (with playback to Google Earth and X-planes).  In the left you can just make out Gordon Hindle's VariEze.

Hangar Flying / Jackpot Timed Event

Jackpot is over for another year but a good time was had by all.  Attendence was decent (most of the usual suspects and then some) as you can see by the image below.  If you're not attending and supporting these events, you're missing some great times and further, they may not exist in the future if and when you want them.

I have the Timed Event results from Char but don't have time to transcribe them right now.  Later if there's interest.  

For anyone who cares, this is the track of my Long-EZ from Lewiston, ID to Sunrise Skypark (ID40), to Jackpot, and return to Lewiston:

Some of us (Gary and Char in their V8-powered Long-EZ, Rob Martinson and his VariEze, Gary Hertzler in his VariEze, etc.) will be at Arlington in a couple of days.  Ah, summertime, when the flying is EZ!

Not "no sanding and filling " but "darn little sanding and filling".  And the workmanship shows it :-)  No matter; I'm happier flying just as others are happier sanding.

As for me, I decided I'd rather spend my limited time in this world flying rather than sanding and filling (and sanding and filling and sanding and ...)  So I bought a nice-looking, well-built flying EZ.  That's no panacea however; incrementally upgrading it is problematic because the airplane is too pretty to "cut into".  Nope, I'm just going to fly it pretty much as it is until it _needs_ upgrading.

Of course, I did upgrade it somewhat by adding wheel pants, gear leg fairings, an LSE electronic ignition, an RV airbox, a Dynon EFIS, and a few other bolt on things :-)  But you won't catch me cutting off the lower winglets, extending the nose, building a Roncz canard or anything else that needs major fiberglass work.

In summary:
- 821RP flown for 4-1/2  years, been all over the western US
- 600 hours flying time
- damn little sanding and filling

I've had a call in to Bill Oertel but he's away on a job and I don't expect to hear from him for a while still.  I had dismissed the Steve Wright unit because as far as I could tell, it wasn't a bolt-in unit (some fiberglass work required) and was planning to go with the Jack Wilhelmson unit until I ran into Bill at Columbia earlier this month.  Bill sounded like he was still making these and it would be lower cost than the other units.  I was just looking for some first-hand installation experience, so thanks.

Jeff, which electric nose gear did you install and how much hassle in the installation did you find?  As far as I'm concerned, the less "Dremel surgury" needed, the better :-)  Also, I understand that clearance behind the instrument panel can be a limiting factor in some cases.  What was your experience?

Easy, but not a survivable or particularly effective one in a composite aircraft.

A quarter-wave dipole is about 23 inches at 121.5 MHz.  If I were to do this (and ignoring the requirements of the TSO) I would weld or braze a small diameter stainless steel rod to the center pin of a female BNC connector and pot it with epoxy inside the connector to provide mechanical strength.  Copper wire or even a copper tape whip would be electrically effective too but not as rugged.   Similarly, running coax to an external antenna would be electrically effective.

Or you could just fly around with the broken-off antenna :-)  That's about as effective as the typical 121.5 MHz ELT IMO (based on my experience with ELT searches in the Civil Air Patrol where all we ever found were false alarms -- the actual ELT events were almost impossible to pick up unless very close).  YMMV of course.  And the newer 406 MHz ELTs are a whole different story.
