Spin on oil filter Question?
«
on:

Just installed a new spin on oil filter purchased from Ken Miller. I do not have a vernatherm on my engine so I will have to use a plug instead.
Is the $30 plug the only game in town, or are there other methods in use?
Thanks

I recently installed an ECi right-angle oil filter adapter and my EZ friends/mentors convinced me I'd benefit from a Vernatherm so I abandoned thoughts of plugging the port instead. I bought one via eBay for $65 -- not much more than the plug. Of course, YMMV and a used Vernatherm from eBay is a pig in a poke but in this case I lucked out.
ECi also has brand new Vernatherms for a reasonable (in an aviation context :-) price. See

The oil filter adapter is at

and at $179 seems like a good value (again, in an aviation context).
One (more) piece of unsolicited advice: if your engine is an O235, be sure to look for the presence of a Viscosity Valve and remove it. It's located on the accessory case between the right magneto and the tach drive (pointed to by the pen in this image:

This is what it looks like when it's removed:

The plug is re-installed.

I also just insalled a angle oil filter adapter. I was told that if you hava a old venatherm you can cut the end off and use it for a plug. I spent the $30 dollars.
Thanks
Tom
ps. I was also told not to try to plug it with anything else as the tread is unique to the oil housing.

Thanks for the info. I found a vernatherm valve on ebay and closed it out for $68. Now if it works as advertised I'll be in good shape.
